All a flutter to destroy the US Constitution.
This was not lost on the Founding Fathers, for many made similar statements as the often plagiarized quote "those who will trade liberty for security deserve neither, and will lose both". They knew that Americans would find themselves overwhelmed by their own responsibilities, especially at the Federal level. As a defense they put in several well articulated and detailed constraints over what the Federal Government could do to the People and States. No Amendement in the original Bill of Rights is more profound than the 9th. The 9th clearly states that the Federal Government only maintains the powers detailed in the Constitution and that all other authority is granted to the People and the State.
Today we find ourselves at a familiar cross-road over security. In many dialogues based seemingly only on headlines and false interpretations of the uneducated, the People are more than willing to give up their right to personal defense. Many construe this incorrectly as solely security from other Citizens instead of the fundamental check that it is - a check to the Federal Government. Throughout the Constitution there are checks and balances, most primarily in the branches of Government, but that is not all. The Amendements are specifically inclined to protect the document itself from the very system it established: the ultimate check & balance. In the United States, unlike any other country in the documented history of mankind, the People are in an arrangement with their Government, that arrangement dictates that the People, not the Government, are ultimately in charge. This itself is exceptional. And that ultimate check of authoritative control comes from not only the Rights guaranteed, but the possibility that if all else fails the People themselves have the fundamental capacity to defend their very lives and way of life from the Government they control.
This is core to the American dream, the foundation and the reason that America has been such a successful nation in such a short time. The 9th Amendement is the most important text in the Bill of Rights - making the Federal Government submissive to the People and State. The Constitution is an agreement, an agreement of the masses to follow a Government that understand certain principles of the Agreement. This ensures that the People are in charge.
Sandy Hook has been bastardized primarily by the media and closely seconded by the Politicians of the day. Instead of the recognition of a tragedy and the fundamental need for a better understanding of "why" people feel compeled to murder, the Government and media has focused on the method of attack. In some cases making such absurd conclusions as "well if there were less bullets, less people would die" - we should strive that no one dies, not simply fewer. The argument was posed that Countries with less access to defense have less tragedy implemented by those same instruments. What these debaters seem to forget is that no other country on the planet is as free as the United States, in no other land are the Citizens given such unwavering rights. This is the quintessential apples and oranges argument. As is the luke warm comparison that the Nation is so trustworthy that the People need not worry. This trustworthiness is easily equated to the fact that the People are by definition the ultimate check in this agreement. The Peoples ability to defend and rise up is what forces the Government to take their opinions seriously and not be reckless with policy.
The greatest flaw in America today is the overwhelming ineptitude and lack of understanding of the very Citizens occupying it. When I hear the media and "people" make such exacerbated and false claims as to the 2nd Amendement in the Constitution, it makes me weep for a Nation. It also draws mounting concern. Throughout the limited History of the United States, whenever a "right" was removed, violence of unparalleled levels was encountered. Initially the change of a Nation with the removal of a Slave based work force, though necessary, resulted in the most casualties of US persons in the History of the Nation, all wars included. Then came the removal of Alcohol, which resulted in the creation of the Mafia in the United States - a plague we still have today. If this Nation were to some how attempt to fundamentally alter the right to bear arms, not the 'privilege' to bear arms, there would be a turning of the tide and unexpected consequences. Remember that it is the People that rule this land, and the rights that make it exceptional. It is the People that are in control and without the People's Rights, those individuals in the marble laced buildings have no authority to operate anything.
Respect yourselves, look at the harder problem to devise the greater solution. Don't selectively limit yourselves for the theory of Security. Remember, We the People were the foundation of this Nation, not Democrats nor Republicans.
