Envy - per our fearless leader
President Obama was quoted with the following:
"This is one of the biggest things I'm going to be pushing back on this year, this notion that this is somehow class warfare, that we're trying to stir up envy," Obama said. "Nobody envies rich people, everybody wants to be rich. Everybody aspires to be rich, and everybody understands you've got work hard to be successful. That's the American way."
I'm afraid our dear leader needs to look up the definition of envy, which Websters Dictionary defines as: a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.
Hmm, it would seem that nearly every American envies something, and the idea of being well off is certainly something to go for on the bucket list. To say that Americans don't envy the rich is irrational, irresponsible and simply out of touch. America is founded around the concept of reward for success, and in recent years Americas fixation on the rich is more pronounced than ever. All one has to do is look towards what Americans watch: Kardashians, Real Housewives, etc, all shows built around the concept of wealth. Take a look at who America rewards, look at who it doesn't. All aspects of envy.
However, I do believe some degree of envy can be healthy as long as it is built around personal greatness. To envy ones self being great, is a fine thing and brings out the best in an individual. To sit stagnant and envy the success of another, or capacity within, is a sin.
