Political Correctness is seriously taking a leap for the surreal.
Once again the NFL franchise the Washington Redskins find themselves in dispute over their name. The team choose the name to represent power and superiority and for some reason because less than 1% of America has an issue with that, and it is probably more like less than .00001%, the team might have to change their name. This is absurd. Political correctness is insane at this level.
This would be a different story if the Redskins was used in a derogatory fashion and was mocking and making fun of Native American people, but it isn't. This is absolutely no different than the Atlanta Braves or the Cleveland Indians - and they take the same heat for the same reason. It is high time that we stopped cowering in America to every lone voice. We care constantly looking for the next Civil Rights movement, apparently.
The woman who is attempting, yet again, to get the Redskins to change their name, has waged a nearly life long battle against the NFL team. She has received no mass support, she hasn't seen essentially any non-native American support - yet this is still an issue, why? That is the major problem with America. Our court system makes it possible for this ridiculous woman to take a "group" to court for absolutely no rationale reason. If she is offended by the name "Redskins" don't buy tickets to an NFL game, or don't buy a single NFL thing. It is not her job to change the world for the majority.
And the comparison of the term "Redskin" to the term "nigger" is insane. The term "nigger", which is an actual term in the Dictionary and not necessarily derogatory, was used for about 140 years to define a group of people within America in a shameful fashion - now it is used by blacks as sort of a cool "slang" but for some reason white people can't say it (that is confusing in and of itself). The term Redskin was briefly used by very few people to define Native Americans, so few in fact that it is difficult to find official references to "redskins" in a bad connotation. One of the overriding problems we have when we attempt to make "words" bad is the fact that words carry a contextual meaning. It is the context that determines the weight and impact meant of the word, unfortunately America is pretty incompetent when it comes to understanding this. Eventually America will learn that its incessant use of "law" to impose how Citizens act and speak will end miserably with constant conflict and a general malaise of society. Because people will learn that it was never the words that were the problem, but the actions of their speakers.
