Bullying vs Harrassment
Throughout the existence of man kind there has been bullying, mocking and making fun at ones expense. This is not a new phenomenon. What is new is social media, and the apparent disregard parents feel for blocking this outlet or monitoring this outlet in regards to their children. Nearly every "suicide because of bullying" you hear about mentions some where that "..and he was relentlessly mocked on Facebook or MySpace". For starters, why parents let their kids have open access on Facebook I will never understand, secondly how about engaging your kids and letting them know that high school is not the end all be all of their lives.
Now on to the difference in harassment and bullying - bullying is minimal mocking mainly to prop another parties personal persona up, harassment is aggressive in nature and done to hurt or harm more that pump up the pride of an aggressor. In a recent article discussed was the 'bullying' of a 68 year old woman by high school kids; here are some quotes: "Some boys demand to know her address, saying they want to come to her house to perform sexual acts and steal from her.
The bullying continues unabated for about 10 minutes in the video, reducing Klein to tears as a giggling student jabs her arm with a book in one instance. "Oh my God, you're so fat," one says."
She said one comment from a boy aboard the bus was especially painful. He tells her that she does not have family because "they all killed themselves because they didn't want to be near you."
This isn't bullying, his is aggravated harassment and should be treated as such. We need to stop this nonsensical labeling in America. There is a difference and it should be noted. And little did this immature piece of trash human know that this woman's son had committed suicide 10 years ago. I think it is high time America stopped treating high school students who commit crimes with kid gloves and start asking for some level of responsibility from both the 'student' and the parent.
