Gods of the Week.

Remember where the days of the week come from, and maybe you’ll understand why certain days just suck by the nature of their existence:

Monday: Ironically “Manic Monday” was actually provided to us by Nordic God Mani. Mani personifies the Moon and races across the sky chased by a wolf name Hati representing “hate”. Whenever that nasty beast caught him, we have an eclipse. Ouch. So next time you wake up to that crappy alarm on Monday morning, figure this much, at minimum you weren’t eaten by a wolf and that is a pretty awesome start to a week.

Tuesday: Ugh, the second day of a work week and taken from the Nordic God Tiwaz.. Tiwaz, like many Germanic/Nordic Gods, was a God of Battle. In the case of Tiwaz he was God of single combat, victory and glory. According to lore, Tiwaz gave his hand to save the world, so considering you have a few late afternoon meetings, at least you didn’t have to sacrifice a limb.

Wednesday: Derived from “Wooton’s Day”, taken from the Nordic God – Odin. Odin was the god of Wisdom, Battle, Death and Inspiration, which pretty much describes ‘hump day’ as we know it. Now while Odin is infamous for destroying an Ice Giant and creating the World, you can spend your mid-day in the week debating what will happen over the upcoming weekend and getting one day closer to Friday.

Thursday: Usually thought of as a pretty awesome day as the precursor to Friday, Thursday takes its name from the Nordic God Thor. And again, those crazies Nords have assigned yet another War God to the workweek. God of War and the Sky, Thor was empowered by a Hammer that created thunder and lightening. Which, when you think about it, really describes Thursday. It begins with the vile of another day of the workweek, or War, and ends by ringing in Friday with explosions of excitement; all in all, not a bad way to kick of Friday.

Friday: Finally the last day of a workweek and the kick-off to the weekend, truly awesome. And just as awesome as the day itself is the Goddess it was named after – Frigg (Frija/Frea). Frigg was the wife of the God of Wednesday and the Goddess of Fertility. And as anyone can attest that goes out on Friday night, there are plenty of folks getting their Frigg on. Next time someone busts out a “Thank God it’s Friday”, correct them, “Thank Goddess it’s Friday”.
