It's Tax Time
Good old April 15th, the day the US Government officially lays pipe on its citizens. It is amazing to me to know that nearly 47% of the populous will pay no taxes what so ever and actually have the possibility of getting money back, even though they put nothing in. Think about that, you pay nothing and get a return sounds like a Ponzi scheme, well it is but it is done to "those other people".
Every year around this time people start clamoring about taxes, how they owe money or how they pay too much, well where are these people the other 364 days of the year when legislatures are creating these 'bills'? It seems every time there is an election they completely forget how pissed they were about taxes and start putting on their Donkey or Elephant garb. How about next time around we don't get bogged down in the bullshit and realize what really hits home the most, taxes. Nothing else.
Health care is a huge issue, sure, as is the epic failure of Americas first true socialist endeavor..Social Security. Speaking of Social Security or SS, you should consider this if you're 35 or younger, you aren't getting this money. By the time you'll be legally able to collect, say 94 years old, there isn't any money. There never really was but nobody bothered to pay attention, much as they do with the tax code in the US.
Look back almost 100 years to 1913 when the US Government decided it should levy an income tax, basically creating an entire citizenship of indentured servants. That is what we are, we have a master and he demands payment. In 1913 the US Income Tax was created and sold as "a tax on the rich and the rich alone" (sound familiar?) over the years that 'rich' bar got lower and lower until it claimed 50% of the citizens in the country. And when this lovely tax is brought up people love to say "help the middle-class", please the middle-class gets plenty of help. Do you realized that the vast majority of all taxes in the US are paid by the richest 10%. Does that seem fair? Does that seem just? How about if I told you that only women had to pay income tax. That would equate to a little more than 50% of the population paying taxes, as we have it now. That would be labeled as discriminatory, yet when the same logic is applied based on financials, we're fine with it. America really needs to define what it is for, and what it is against.
First look to why the income tax was derived. The income tax, basically detailed in the 16th Amendment but more so with the Revenue Act of 1894, was a replacement for the tariff based income system the US Federal Government had in place. Look up Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act, this was enacted in 1909 to help progressives with the tariff system in the United States. The 'tariff' as it was used was basically a Capitalist approach to charging business fees to generate revenue for the country. The evolution of a tariff system to an income tax or revenue tax system was a departure from allowing business to pay to do business to making citizens pay to live within the realm of the United States. This is truly un-American. Tariffs on business was a revenue process that drew funds form business endeavors, namely 'the rich' as we call them today. Teddy Roosevelt, who was a progressive Republican, wanted tariff and tax reforms in 1908, but didn't succeed...however his replacement, Taft, immediately went to work building a progressive tax structure. Essentially this move responsibility from primarily companies to generate revenue for the government, to each citizen being responsible for the government funds. Keep in mind both Taft and Roosevelt were Republicans, not Democrats.
So since that time the US has had a ridiculous progressive model of taxation where the harder you work, the harder you're hit. I can't think of anything more un-American than that. Our current system encourages cheating, laziness and animosity. It is my opinion this could all be quite easily solved and still keep an 'income tax' in place, so as not to have to repeal an Amendment. Simply make the income tax 13% of annual earnings for an individual and 15% of annual earnings for a business. This would create a fair and balanced way of collecting revenue and remove any worry that people were 'cheating' the system.
Now, why will this not be used? I'll tell you. How many people would lose their jobs both in the private and public sectors. IRS, lawyers, accountants would also see a drastic drop in their necessity. So even though this would be the most fair and accurate way to collect a taxed income revenue, it will never be established. Now think of this, the system I proposed would net far more tax dollars than our current system. Russia implemented a flat-tax or single income tax and drastically increased their revenue over a progressive tax system. Hmm, maybe we should crack a book before the next election.
