I am the NRA, and here are things I'm "for"
We hear many times about how the NRA is against any and all gun control, while obviously patently false I thought I'd highlight what most NRA lifers like me are willing to discuss:
1) Enforce our current gun laws. Stop allowing felons who attempt to buy guns to walk, stop allowing return criminals that use a gun to..walk.
2) Background checks for every single official gun sale; gun store, gun show, whatever. However, in regards to me selling a gun to a friend, while I'd say you could have some moderate concern in that area, no gun in those instances is used to kill people. Nearly all guns used to kill people are stolen or obtained illegally by other means. It is very, very rare that a legally purchased gun, belonging to the owner is used by the owner to murder someone. Statistical, fact. Don't believe me? Check the FBI.gov statistics.
3) Do a 30 day waiting period on any firearm purchase, rifle, handgun or otherwise.
4) Facilitate the means for a State to share its public record gun owner laws with another State; if it so chooses.
5) If a firearm is obtained by the police, and deemed stolen, before immediately returning to the original owner, provide a check to see if the owner had in fact had a background check. If not, provide one.
6) Hold firearm owners accountable. If an owners weapon is not secured in a safe while at home and is taken by someone to commit a crime, the owner should have the same charges levied against them that are levied against the convict.
7) Provide federal funds for schools that wish to acquire security for their perimeters.
8) Issue Federal or State employees that have clearances and receive annual or semi-annual background check a license that allows them to bypass "background checks" when buying a firearm.
I believe these are eight items that most NRA life members and gun advocates would be behind as far as a sensible measure on firearms. In the end 99.9% of firearms privately owned in America are never used in a crime, so to penalize legal firearm owners who have never committed a crime is absurd by any and all standards.
Remember, America has a violence problem, not a "gun" violence problem. And we should spend a little more time investigating why the vast majority of mass murdering gun man are under 30 years old.
